There are many fine thinkers who have broken down the steps to creative genius — or at least, the key steps to idea generation.

So we’ve digested the best ideas and theories from the greatest minds and literature to distil the Ideaflip key steps to idea generation, a process part borne out of our experience and part the combination and refining of other theories.

Now of course the path to what might be termed ‘creativity’ or ‘idea generation’ is different depending on your field. As Gary Klein writes in Seeing What Others Don’t: The Remarkable Ways we Gain Insights, a top painter or other artist requires a ten year period of learning the craft. For our purposes ten years is a bit too long. Plus, we’re not trying to make you the next Rembrandt. Our aim is to arm you with what’s needed to make you a business magician. An ideahub general.

Is creativity just for the creatives?

While there are definitely people who are more creative, you need to create an environment where everyone feels they can explore and nurture their own creativity, to give them the belief that they can be creative.

R Keith Sawyer explains in Explaining Creativity: The Science of Human Innovation:

“Creativity is not a special mental process, but involves everyday cognitive processes.”

Our aim at Ideaflip is to take the sting out of the idea generation process — and highlight what these cognitive stages are. We absolutely believe anyone can be creative, any of you or your team could have that killer idea that reinvigorates the company or gets a project moving in the right direction.

One thing is for sure, to be truly creative and consistently have those breakthrough ideas, you have to be curious. You have to be dedicated. You have to be constantly looking, learning, digesting. Gather, distil and process as much information as you possibly can, even if seemingly disparate and unconnected to the issue at hand.

In the following posts we will look at our 6 step process to idea generation:

1- Frame the problem

2- Immersion & research

3- Idea generation

4- Incubation –> illumination

5- Prototyping & verifying

6- Correct/Reprocess/Momentum/Repeat

Ideaflip is an ingenious tool for the remote-working era, providing the perfect, online space for all your team to connect, interact and create — wherever in the world they are.

The Ideaflip Brainstorm PROCESS is also perfect for at-work collaboration. It democratises the workplace, creating a platform for everyone to have their ideas heard — inspiring PEOPLE to participate through PLAY and helps discover and harness everyone’s latent creativity.
