People, Processes, Play

As the incomparable Bill Hicks stated, the word enthusiasm derives from the Greek ‘en theo’, translated as ‘God is within.’ Others label it as “full of the god, inspired, possessed.” @name

The point is, it all amounts to the same thing.

Hicks’ call to play ‘from your f**king heart’ is also a broadside to society. Namely, come round to the idea that the more people enjoy what they are doing, the more fun they have, the more enthused they are, the happier they will be. And in a work sense — the more productive, exciting and unpredictable (in a good sense) an employee you’ll have on their hands.

‘If you enjoy something it’s god’s way of telling you you’re on the right track’.

In ancient India, the word ‘idea’ meant ‘god’. And until the Renaissance the word ‘create’ was exclusive to God — until the remarkable achievements of that age democratised the term. Even today, Keith Richards has alluded to the idea that he didn’t come up with those riffs, he was merely the conduit.

The point is — great ideas are so miraculous that they appear to have been sent from higher source.

And whether you subscribe to a higher power or not (now theres an idea — religion-as-a-service), we can all agree that the power of ideas, innovation and risk-taking has been instrumental to our human progress.

Now that’s all well and good but if you are sitting around waiting divine inspiration, you might be in for a bit of wait…

So how so you maximise (divine) inspiration?

It’s pretty clear that without PEOPLE — as creators or conduits, whatever your preference — the ideas will not be very forthcoming. And what gets the very best out of people? PLAY! (in the main…)

Play keeps the mind supple, relaxed, minimises stress, keeps it in-tune to new things, more likely to take risk — and hence more likely to join the dots in their mind in new and exciting ways.

Psychotherapist Philippa Perry, author of How to Stay Sane points out that “young children often learn best when they are playing, so why shouldn’t we apply that principle to adults too?”

Jo Confino in the Huffingon Post makes a similar point.I see time and again that injecting a sense of fun into work situations gives everyone permission to be more authentic and to take risks. Out of that comes greater innovation, more collaboration and richer learning.”

Change your PROCESS to inspire PEOPLE through PLAY.
